ONTARIO SLEDGE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS
LONDON, ON -- The Ontario Sledge Hockey Association League Championships were held this past Saturday in Guelph. The day saw lots of exciting action as Gold Medal games were played in four divisions. Sledge hockey is a fast-paced,exciting sport played primarily by physically-challenged individuals. OSHA has four leagues that compete during a regular season and a playoff structure that brings the competition down to the finalists. The Junior division is comprised of players 15 years of age and under while Intermediate competitors are 16 and over.
In the Intermediate“C” Division, Whitby defeated North Bay by a 4-0 score. Patrick Assinck with 2, David Sollitt and Joey DeWolfe scored for Whitby while David Kelly got the shutout.
The Intermediate “B”Gold Medal was won in a very close match by Windsor over Kitchener. Craig Silverthorn and Brendan Blanchard were the goal scorers in Windsor’s 2-0 victory. Tim Stewart and Corbin Watson split the duties in goal and played extremely well in the shutout victory.
The Junior final was a very close game with Mississauga edging Buffalo, also by a 2-0 score. Kennedy Johnston and Olivia Smeenk looked after the scoring. Austin Smeenk was terrific in net in shutting down a determined Buffalo squad.
In the final matchup of the day Mississauga earned the Intermediate “A” title with a tense4-3 victory in overtime. Player of the game was Anthony Gale who scored 3 times for the Gold-Medalists, including the winner 27 seconds into the overtime period. Americo Morais tallied once for Mississauga. Cristoph Kothe was outstanding in scoring the hat trick for Buffalo.
This day was a great celebration of sledge with many members of Ontario Sledge Hockey Association on hand as well as representatives from Parasport Ontario and the Ontario Hockey Federation. The host club, Kitchener Sidewinders, did a fabulous job in organizing this day and it was a fun showcase to close out the 2008-09 sledge hockey league schedule.
